What is MTD for ITSA?
Making Tax Digital (MTD) is HMRC’s plan to digitise tax reporting. It’s coming into effect in stages. From April 2026, if you’re self-employed or a landlord earning over £50,000 a year, you’ll need to:
- Keep digital records of your income and expenses using MTD-compatible software (we explain what these are further on). Paper receipts and spreadsheets won’t be enough anymore. All income and expenses must be logged electronically.
- Submit quarterly tax updates (every three months) via your accounting software, instead of just one annual self-assessment tax return.
- File a final end-of-year statement, which will confirm all your income and the tax you owe.
Those earning over £30,000 will need to do this from April 2027. HMRC’s vision is that eventually, all tax payers will be using a form of MTD.
Why MTD Could Be a Good Thing
Although change can be challenging, MTD also brings some benefits that could make tax management easier for neurodivergent entrepreneurs:
✔ More Visibility Over Your Tax Position – Since you’ll be updating your records quarterly, you’ll have a clearer picture of your financial situation throughout the year. This means no more last-minute surprises when your tax bill arrives!
✔ More Time to Plan for Tax Savings – Knowing your estimated tax bill in advance gives you the opportunity to set aside funds gradually and explore potential tax-saving strategies.
For example, did you know that contributing to your pension not only helps you save for retirement, but can also reduce your tax bill?
✔ No More Piles of Paperwork at Year-End – Keeping digital records means you won’t have to scramble through receipts and bank statements at the last minute. Most accounting softwares have compatible receipt-capture technology which means you can simply take a photo of a receipt on your phone.
✔ Streamlined Financial Management – Automated bank feeds and integrated software can make bookkeeping simpler and faster, reducing the need for spreadsheets and manual data entry.
✔ Tax is Still Paid Once a Year – Even though you’ll submit quarterly updates, the actual tax payment schedule remains once per year.
Why MTD Might Be Challenging for Neurodivergent Entrepreneurs
As a neurodivergent business owner, you likely have a unique way of working. MTD introduces new rules that might clash with your preferred workflow, especially if you experience:
- Struggles with time management or time blindness – Deadlines can sneak up on you, and quarterly tax updates mean there’s less room for last-minute catch-ups.
- Technology overwhelm – Learning new accounting software can feel confusing or frustrating, especially if you prefer to focus on running your business.
- Anxiety – the fear of making mistakes or missing deadlines can increase your stress levels.
The good news? You don’t have to handle this alone.Sycamore OBM is here to lighten the load.
