Digital Course Creation: Where Your Hyperfocus Finds a Home
If you’ve ever found yourself three hours deep in a rabbit hole of your own construction, researching a very specific topic “just for fun” and then thought, wait… I could teach this, well, congratulations! You’re already halfway to creating your very own digital course.
But, you might think, I’m sure it’s way too complicated to set up. It’s really not, and Sycamore Online Business Managers are ready and able to help with any tricky bits.
Why are our neurodivergent brains so well-suited to digital course creation?
- Digital courses, once created, are a passive revenue stream requiring very little face-to-face interaction. If you run low on social spoons, the last thing you want is to engage in conversation with a group of people. Digital courses are not live, and participants access the content in their own time, so you don’t have to fit the rest of your life around your teaching hours.
- You can design your courses at a time that suits you and your energy levels. Are you at your best at 11 pm, or up at 4 am, raring to go? Either way, you can log in to your platform and start creating content. For neurodivergent business owners who manage fluctuating energy, sensory needs, or executive function, this flexibility can be the difference between a sustainable income and total burnout.
- They make good use of your special interest or hyperfocus. If you have drilled down into Greek mythology for the last five years, you have a level of specialist knowledge that many people would need a degree to reach.
- When you feel as passionate about a subject as you do, the enthusiasm for it is contagious. Students will come away having experienced the joy of the subject, not just the facts.
What actually is a digital course?
A digital course is simply a way of packaging your knowledge into an online format that people can access in their own time.
That could be:
- Short videos teaching a skill
- Downloadable workbooks or templates
- Audio lessons
- Step-by-step guides
- Interactive exercises
- A mixture of all of the above
Courses can be small and focused or much larger programmes. You do not need to create a 20-module masterpiece with dramatic intro music and professionally filmed content. (We can help you with that too, though!)
Sometimes the most valuable courses solve one specific problem:
“How to organise your finances as a freelancer”
“Beginner watercolour techniques”
“Supporting your neurodivergent child through homework”
“Planning your first social media strategy”
People are often looking for clear guidance from someone who understands a topic well, not perfection.
You already know things that somebody else is trying to learn.
Where does your online course live?
Many people hear “digital course” and immediately picture complicated websites, endless tech setup, video editing software and something that requires a degree in coding to make work.
The reality is much simpler.
Once you have your content, whether that is videos, worksheets, guides, audio recordings or templates, it all lives inside a course platform. Think of it as your digital classroom. It keeps everything organised in one place so your learners can log in, move through the content at their own pace and access what they need without you having to manually send things out every time someone joins.
The platform handles much of the behind-the-scenes work too, things like taking payments, granting access to students, sending emails and keeping course content organised.
This means you can spend less time wrestling with tech and more time focusing on the thing you’re actually brilliant at, which is sharing your knowledge.
Which digital course creation platform should I use?
A very reasonably priced option: Podia
Podia is often a favourite for creators who want things simple, clean, and not emotionally overwhelming. It has a straightforward interface, and courses, downloads and memberships are all in one place. It also features predictable monthly pricing that doesn’t spike as you grow.
It’s especially good if you want to get a course out without learning a new tech language (who has time for that?) and if you prefer fewer options over endless customisation.
A pricier option: Kajabi
Kajabi is a sleek, all-in-one platform with super fancy features and a price tag to match.
For the extra cost, though, you do get more advanced options to play with. Kajabi has highly customisable branding, so you can keep your brand identity throughout the courses. You’ll also find more robust analytics and integrations, and it can do all kinds of automations and email sequences.
Kajabi can be incredibly powerful, but it has a steeper learning curve. This is great if you like complex systems, but less great if you already have decision fatigue and just reading this paragraph has stressed you out.
There are many other platforms available, and your OBM will support you in finding one that is just right for your business.
Other digital course creation platforms worth exploring
Podia and Kajabi are two platforms we often like, but they are far from the only options available. The best fit depends on your business, budget, how your brain works, and how much complexity you actually want to deal with.
Other popular platforms include:
Teachable – A straightforward course platform designed to keep things simple and easy to manage.
Thinkific – Flexible and beginner-friendly, with a good balance between ease of use and customisation.
LearnWorlds – Offers more interactive learning features if you want a more immersive course experience.
Circle or Mighty Networks – Great if community and connection are an important part of your course experience.
There are lots of options out there, and you do not need to figure it all out on your own. Your Sycamore OBM can help you find a platform that feels like a good fit for your business and the way you work.
Making your digital course your own
You can use your neurodivergent strengths to make a course that you’d like to attend, by:
- Creating short, structured lessons instead of hour-long videos, to ensure students’ concentration isn’t lost at important points
- Providing written, printable summaries for those who require processing support
- Using a lot of images instead of large banks of text
- Making every step of the journey accessible
- Giving students clear expectations and limiting surprise tasks
- Using straightforward language which conveys your personality rather than churning out pages of AI-driven marketing nonsense.
We’re here
Sycamore Online Business Management has OBM’s with lots of experience in delivering online courses, and they are ready to support you with anything that feels difficult. This might be uploading content to the platform, populating the platform’s CRM tool with student information, managing necessary correspondence, ensuring payments are running smoothly, and translating insights to make your course as profitable as possible.
Digital courses aren’t about showing off, and you don’t have to chase perfection. It’s about building something that shows how much you care, in a format that fits the way you think. There are people out there who would love to learn in this way.
I rarely quote from the 90s baseball movie Field of Dreams, but it felt right here:
If you build it, they will come.
