What's it like to work at Sycamore OBM?

Whether you’re a client or a prospective Online Business Manager, you’ve probably wondered what we at Sycamore OBM do on a daily basis!

First of all, what is an OBM? OBM stands for Online Business Manager, which is a role designed to fill in the gaps in a business’s everyday operations, and take your business to the next level by working co-creatively. Some of what we do falls under Virtual Assistant work, and some of it is outside of that scope and a bit more specialised.

Sycamore OBM is unique in that we work specifically with Neurodivergent entrepreneurs and Neurodiverse businesses. We use our lived experience and years of specialisation to solve our clients’ problems and create systems for success.

Online Business Management: Variety is Key

It’s rare for us to have two days in a row that look exactly alike! Each of the OBMs on our team has a slightly different workday, different clients, and different specialties.

One of our newer OBMs, Liz, shares what her days consist of: “Each day, I generally do a check-in with a client, check my task list, and get going on getting stuff done! That can be anything from calendar organisation and scheduling to getting to know my client’s contacts, financial filing and transaction reconciling.”

Sarah, another new hire, has a slightly different day-to-day: “Most of my tasks right now are centred around social media content creation and SEO. I tend to block time for each client, rather than for each type of task, meaning that I’ll do most of my work for one client on Monday and Tuesday, and most of my work for another on Wednesday and Thursday. Having control of my schedule is key for me!”

Sycamore OBM’s Strong Team Ethos

Our weekly team check-ins are a cornerstone of our team culture. We focus not just on the work being completed, but also on how we feel about our work.

Liz put it so well: “Our team is a TEAM in the truest sense of the word. Things that are happening in our work lives and personal lives are shared, acknowledged, supported, and accommodated.”

We Love Learning On-the-Job

When asked what she was most looking forward to about her future with Sycamore, Rosalie said, “Learning, learning, and more learning!”

We have the opportunity to learn different markets and industries along with new skills, meaning there’s no ceiling for our professional growth.

This can be especially enticing for neurodivergent people who may tend towards a “jack of all trades” approach. Which leads us to…

Sycamore OBM is Neuro-Affirming

We honour the unique needs of our clients and our Online Business Managers, because we value sustainable relationships.

Rosalie put it beautifully when she said, “I’m autistic myself and there are tasks in life which are just too much of a challenge to complete. Sometimes all it takes is somebody else to listen and guide me and sometimes I need to pass that task on. I really value the opportunity to support other neurodivergent people with the areas of work which they find most challenging. There is no reason why neurodivergent people should not thrive in self-employment or as entrepreneurs – our goal is to help clients identify any barriers and find a way over or through them together.”
